Statewide, Division of Forestry authorized controlled burning on 2.7 million acres of private and public land, up from the previous record 2.3 million acres burned a year earlier.
Controlled burning is one of the major ways the state controls wildfires by reducing thick underbrush and eliminating dead vegetation on forest floors.

Officials say controlled burns also allow forestry personnel to improve wildlife habitat, as well as control diseases, insects and invasive species and assist in the recycling of nutrients into the soil.
