The Apalachicola Times will continue to print legal ads for the county for the next year.
County commissioners decided to stick with its existing contract with the Times which costs the county 1.05 a square inch for its legal ads.
The county’s second newspaper, The Chronicle, had put in a bid for a 1.04 a square inch, but the county felt that the increased circulation of the Times made it worth spending the extra penny.
The Apalachicola Times has a paid weekly circulation of nearly 2700 papers, for the Chronicle its 1200 papers a week.
Chronicle owner David Mills argued that the county should ignore the circulation numbers because the Chronicle has already saved the county thousands of dollars by bringing competition to the process.
Mister Mills said that before the Chronicle set up shop Franklin County was paying some of the highest advertising rates in the state, but the Times was forced to lower their rates because his newspaper made a bid for the legal ads.
