Cessna lands on Highway 98 in Wakulla County
A Tampa pilot made an emergency landing of a single engine airplane on Highway 98 in Wakulla County Monday night.
29-year-old Michael Dustin Phillips landed a Cessna near the Jefferson County line shortly before 8 p.m. Monday.
The pilot was not injured and the plane was not damaged.
The pilot was flying from Gainesville to Destin and 45 minutes into the flight the plane began running very rough.
The pilot was diverted to Tallahassee Airport, but moments later the plane lost power at 4,000 feet and 120 miles per hour.
The pilot used GPS to locate the highway and after making a loop was able to use vehicle headlights as a reference point to land.
The Wakulla County Sheriff’s Office, St. Marks Volunteer Fire Department and Wakulla County Fire Department responded to the call from the Tallahassee Regional Airport.
The aircraft was sitting perpendicular to the roadway on the shoulder out of traffic when investigators arrived on scène.
Arrangements were made to have the plane disassembled at the site and removed from the scene by trailer on Nov. 9.
The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating the incident as a mechanical failure.
