Florida legislature may stop new septic tank rule during special session

The state legislature plans to stop the implementation of a new septic tank inspection mandate during a one-day special session on November 16th
Under a rule passed this year, Florida plans to require that all septic tank owners have their tanks pumped and inspected every five years whether the tanks have shown any problems or not.
The law will affect an estimated 2.6 million homes in the state including thousands in Franklin County.
The cost for the inspection and pumping will probably run in the neighborhood of $400 to $500 and if the tank fails the state inspection, it must be repaired or replaced and brought up to the new inspection standards.
The law is slated to go into effect on January 1st, but the legislature could delay the implementation during the special session and then repeal it during the regular legislative session in the spring.
Franklin County commissioners opposed the septic tank rule – saying that it would have a major impact on Franklin County residents, many of whom can’t afford the additional costs.
