County commissioners have agreed to accept a 112 thousand dollar grant from the Department of Agriculture to pay for a re-shelling program early next year.
The grant will be overseen by the Franklin County Seafood Workers Association for the program which will take place in February.
Commissioner Smokey Parrish said he thinks February would be the best time to do it because that when there is the biggest spat catch but the said they would allow the re-shelling earlier if the bay was closed for more than two weeks before February because of heavy rain.
Under the grant, 90 thousand dollars would be made available to pay oystermen for placing the shell, and 7500 would go the Seafood Workers Association to organize the workers.
The rest of the money would pay to transport the shell from the Department of Agriculture’s shell pile in Apalachicola to the various loading points.
The board also asked that the program be audited to quell any rumors of money being misappropriated but learned they didn’t have to do that because the Department of Agriculture audits the program anyway.
