Franklin County commission seeks money to purchase land for parks

County commissioners are taking a stab at getting some state money next year to purchase some environmentally sensitive property in the county.
The board agreed this week apply for funding through the Florida Communities Trust to purchase land – that group provides funding for properties which then have to be used for public, open space like parks.
Each year Florida Communities Trust awards grants to cities, counties and non-profit environmental organizations to acquire and preserve land for parks and recreation areas.
They fund as many projects as they can afford with the money they receive through the legislature.
The county purchased Indian Creek Park in Eastpoint through the program and the city of Apalachicola has received funding in the past to purchase waterfront lots in the city limits for its Riverfront Park.
Recently, however, the trust has not had much money to spend because of budget cuts at the state level- but commissioners say they still want to apply just in case some money is forthcoming.
The county is interested in purchasing some property at the entrance to St. George Island – they have attempted to buy that land in the past but were not able to reach an agreement on price with the landowner.
The county commission said it will also put in an application for property at Alligator Point.
