County commissioners are asking the Florida Fish and wildlife Conservation Commission to stop blocking a boat landing off Highway 65.
The ramp, known as Butcher Pen Landing, is a small boat landing just south of Gardner’s Landing which has been used for years by local fishermen and hunters.
The FWC said it was concerned about shore erosion at the site which they blame on boats launching in an area where there is no boa tramp.
The state is also concerned that the site is becoming along term campsite.
The FWC decided to address the issue by blocking the landing with rocks.
They want the area to be used only be people launching kayaks and canoes.
That decision has not sat well with the people who have used the boat landing for years, one of whom, a Mister Charles Carrol Jr., expressed his concerns to the county commission on Tuesday.
Commissioner Bevin Putnal said blocking the landing is totally corrupt – and he feels the there’s enough room at the site so that boaters and kayakers can both launch there.
Commissioner Putnal pointed out that local people were launching from Butchers Pen long before the state purchased the land.
Putnal wanted to send a letter to the board asking that the state back off but county planner Alan Pierce said he has already addressed the issue with the FWC and it is considering putting in a small primitive boat ramp at the site.
They will make their decision sometime next week.
Meanwhile Mister Carrol said he has already made quite a nice ramp at the site using the rocks that the fish and wildlife commission keeps putting there to block access.
