Franklin County seeks to expand cell phone service to northern part of county

County commissioners and the Franklin County emergency Management office are working to expand cell phone service to heavily wooded areas of the county.
The issue was raised in October by Commissioner Bevin Putnal who is concerned that a lack of cell phone service on Highway 65 and County Road 67 poses a danger to the large number of people who hunt in the area.
Putnal pointed out that hunters aren’t the only ones affected by the lack of cell phone service.
The area is also frequented by fishermen and both roads are heavily traveled.
The board agreed in October to write a letter to Verizon asking the company to look at expanded service.
On Tuesday the Emergency Management Office said it is petitioning the state Division of Emergency Management in Tallahassee to secure cellular phone service in areas historically without it and are also working with Liberty and Wakulla county officials on the issue.
