How Franklin County voted on Tuesday


            Franklin County commissioner Cheryl Sanders will keep her seat for another four years.
Sanders, a Democrat, won a 4th term to the county commission on Tuesday taking 59.9 percent of the District 2 vote.
Republican Bill Snyder from Lanark Village took 35.8 percent of the vote and Independent Richard Sands of Carrabelle took 4.2 percent of the vote.
Local voters overwhelmingly opposed a referendum that would have allowed the school system to continue a quarter mill critical operating needs levy.
The school system said the continued levy would have raised about a half million dollars, offsetting the loss of nearly 600 thousand dollars in federal stimulus money.
Nearly 69 percent of local voters opposed the referendum – just over 31 percent supported it.
In other races, Franklin County voters voted for Marco Rubio for US senator with 54.5 percent of the vote over Charlie Crist who picked up 27.3 percent of the vote and Kendrick Meek who took about 16 percent of the vote.
Democrat Alex Sink won in Franklin County in the Governor’s race by 4 votes.
She received 1939 votes to Rick Scott’s 1935.
Republican Steve Southerland took more votes than long term congressman Alan Boyd.
Southerland received 2213 votes to Boyd’s 1667.
56 percent of Franklin County voters also cast their ballot for Republican Pam Bondi for Florida Attorney general, 51 percent voted for Republican Jeff Atwater for Chief Financial Officer, and 54 percent voted for Republican Adam Putnam for Commissioner of Agriculture.
Republican Jimmy Patronis took 63 percent of the local vote for State Representative for District 6, Democrat Leonard Bembry took 50 percent of the vote for state representative for District 10.
He got two more votes than his opponent, Republican David Feigin.
Democrat Bill Montford took 52 percent of Franklin County’s vote for State Senator, beating Republican John Shaw who took 43.5 percent of the vote.
There were 6 constitutional amendments on the ballot this year.
Franklin County voters voted no to repeal the provision in the State Constitution that requires public financing of campaigns of candidates for elective statewide office who agree to campaign spending limits.
They voted yes to provide additional homestead exemptions for military personnel serving overseas, and overwhelmingly opposed an amendment that would have required a public vote on changes to the county’s comprehensive land use plan.
Local voters also supported two amendments setting standards for redistricting and opposed a plan to remove the class size amendment from the state constitution.
Franklin County voters also overwhelmingly supported a non-binding referendum asking for a balanced federal budget.
Turnout for the mid-term election was over 50 percent.
4142 people voted in the election out of 7724 registered voters for a voter turnout of 53.6 percent.
