- Hurricane Hunter aircraft investigating Tomas early this morning found that the storm has weakened even further into a tropical depression.
- Maximum sustained winds have decreased to 35mph, and as of 5am EDT Wednesday, Tropical Depression Tomas was located about 410 miles southwest of Port-au-Prince, Haiti, which is also about 883 miles from Miami, Florida.
- Because of the erratic behavior of the storm, the forecast track and intensity is more uncertain at this time. However, increasingly favorable environmental conditions may allow Tomas to gather some strength today and there is a 70% chance that Tomas will become a tropical storm within 24 hours and a 50/50 chance that Tomas could become a minimal hurricane on Friday just before impacting land.
- Tropical Depression Tomas is now moving to the west-northwest at 5 mph, but a turn to the northwest should occur later today, followed by a turn to the north and northeast on Thursday as the flow ahead of a strong cold front moving through the Southeastern U.S. should steer Tomas northward.
- The official forecast track has shifted back to the east and has the center of Tomas passing over the two peninsulas of Haiti Friday then slowing down and lingering just north of Hispaniola over the weekend.
- At this time, rainfall amounts of 4-7 inches are forecast for much of southern Haiti, with isolated amounts up to 8-10 inches possible. Central and northern portions of Haiti may may receive between 2 and 5 inches.
