An estimated 500 people came out to the Franklin County/ Apalachicola regional airport on Sunday to see a piece of American history.
The WW II era, B-17 Flying Fortress known as the Liberty Belle spent a day at the airport where it was opened to the public for tours.
The visit was fitting, because before the airport was called an airport, it was the Apalachicola Army Air Gunnery School.
In addition to the “Liberty Belle” being on display, with ground tours—some VIPs were afforded the opportunity to actually ride in the plane.
Kenneth Tucker who was a B-17 tail Gunter—held a book signing of his book—“Last Roll Call”—with his daughter—Wanda Gooden.
The Camp Gordon Johnson Museum displayed some of their memorabilia, including a jeep, Duck and other military vehicles.
The Randolph family, which owns the Natural Medicine Shoppe in Apalachicola, displayed memorabilia in honor and memory of Cleve Randolph.
Dr. Randy Randolph and The Natural Medicine Shop sponsored Sunday’s event.
The Boy Scouts sold hot dogs and “Ron the Apple Dumpling guy” of Florida Seafood Festival fame, brought over his ice cream stand.
Airport officials say the event was more successful than they ever could have hoped and it brought plenty of good PR for the airport.
Because of its success they are considering an even bigger event next year.
Thanks to one and all who participated to make this spectacle a resounding success and especially thanks to Dr. Randy Randolph and the “Randolph Medicine Shop” of Apalachicola.
