If you would like to get your hands dirty and help uncover some of the history of Apalachicola – you can have your chance this weekend.
A group of archaeologists will be in town this weekend to do research at the Orman House historic state park in Apalachicola and would like to have local volunteers take part.
The Florida Public Archaeology Network at the University of West Florida along with the Friends of Franklin County State Parks and the Florida Park Service are doing the research as part of a plan to restore and reconstruct the “Tenant House” at the Orman House.
The groups, along with any volunteers will be doing excavations around the Orman House to get information about the Tenant House and those that lived there.
They will also collect artifacts documenting the history of the site.
The project is will begin this weekend and more could be scheduled before the end of January.
Volunteers who would like to help must sign up in advanced by contacting Barbara Hines by calling 850-933-5779.
Volunteer forms must be completed prior to volunteering at the dig site and all volunteers under the age of 16 must be accompanied by an adult.
Even if you don’t want to get your hands dirty, interested members of the public are still welcome to visit the excavation during the weekend, observe the work, and discuss findings with the archaeologists on duty.
