Researchers say a fish kill in the Apalachicola Bay just before Christmas was likely caused by cold weather and not by oil.
The fish kill, which primarily impacted hard-head catfish was reported on December the 23rd.
The fish were found at Indian Pass and at the Bob Sikes Cut.
There were reports of oil at the site, but it turned out that was green algae which had taken on a dark brown color.
The team that investigated the fish kill said they believe the fish were killed by cold weather shock.
Between December 6th and the 15th the average low temperatures were in the low 30’s.
Investigators also pointed out that if oil had been the cause that species other than hard-head catfish would have been impacted.
