County strikes deal to keep Butcher Landing open to boaters

County Commissioners have reached an agreement with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission that will allow boaters to continue to use the ramp at Butcher Pen Landing.

Butcher Pen Landing is a small boat landing which has been used for years by local fishermen and hunters.

There is no real ramp there, but hunters and fishermen have launched their boats there for decades.

Last year the state tried to close off the landing to boaters because of concerns that the activity was eroding the shoreline.

The FWC said it was also concerned that the site was becoming along term campsite.

Commissioners opposed closing off the area for boaters but have now reached an agreement with the FWC that will not only allow people to continue to launch boats there, but will also have the state build 6 camp sites and improve the road leading to Butcher pen.

For that, the county had to agree to provide litter control at the site which shouldn’t be too difficult since they already do the same thing at Gardner’s Landing and Sand beach which are just a few miles away.
