Florida honors Jessica Dempsey as one of Florida's best science and math students

One of Franklin County’s best students was honored last week along with dozens of her peers from around the state.

Florida’s highest achieving science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) students from the Panhandle joined students from around the state last Thursday and Friday in Orlando to be honored during the Sunshine State Scholars program.

The two-day awards and recruitment event celebrates the accomplishments of elite students and provides a unique opportunity for Florida’s universities and colleges to recruit their talents.
Each school district selects and names one 11th grade scholar to attend the event
Franklin County High School Junior Jessica Dempsey represented Franklin County.

Taylor Jay Husband from Wewahitchka High School was chosen from Gulf County, Mollie Holmes came from Liberty County and Kristie Hodges was chosen from Wakulla High.
The Scholars event started as a simple science and math competition in 1997 but has evolved into a program designed to recognize Florida’s top high school STEM students and to allow more than 25 Florida public colleges and universities recruit them to pursue their post secondary education in Florida.
