Florida is not for the weak

The number of Shark attacks in Florida waters was down last year – but don’t worry, we’re still number one.

There were 13 unprovoked shark attacks including one fatality in Florida waters in 2010 – that’s the lowest number since 2004 when there were only 12.

The average over the past 10 years is just over 23 shark attacks in Florida waters every year.

Nearly all of the attacks were in the southern portion of the state with 6 in Volusia County alone.

Researchers say the number of attacks in the Sunshine State simply means that more people come to Florida for its beaches than anywhere else and that increases the chances of sharks and people meeting.
Florida wasn’t the only US state with shark stories.
There were also attacks in North Carolina, California, South Carolina, and Hawaii, Georgia, Maine, Washington, Oregon, Texas, and Virginia.
And Sharks aren’t necessarily partial to Americans.
Researchers documented unprovoked attacks in Australia, South Africa, Vietnam, Egypt, the Bahamas, Brazil, Fiji, Madagascar, Mascarene Islands, Solomon Islands, Canary Islands, Tonga, and the United Arab Emirates.
Just over half the attacks were on surfers followed by swimmers and then scuba divers.
