Franklin County seeks contractors to clean bridges

Franklin County commissioners say they would like to see if they can get more work out of a 12 thousand dollar fund of state money that is currently being used to clean local bridges 6 times a year.

The money currently goes to a company called Transfield Services which contracts with the state Department of Transportation to maintain state roads in Franklin County.

That contract includes cleaning the Carrabelle, Apalachicola, and St. George Island bridges.

County Commissioner Pinki Jackel said she thinks that if the county were to take the money instead of Transfield and put the bridge cleaning up for bid, that the county could probably find a local contractor willing to clean the bridge more often.

In fact, she’d like to see the bridges cleaned much more often; she’d like them cleaned once every two weeks instead of every two months as Transfield currently does it.

Miss Jackel said the bridges need to be kept clean because they are the ways that people get to our water and most scenic places of the county and any trash is hard to miss.

The board did agree that if the county seeks bids from local contractors, that not only will it provide work for local people but will also make sure that the money stays in Franklin County where it will be spent at other local businesses.

The board did have concerns about whether a contractor could afford to buy the necessary insurance and still make money by cleaning the bridges 26 times a year but agreed to seek proposals from local businesses to see if anyone is willing to take the job.
