County commission urges residents to Fishery Management Council advisory panels

County commissioners are urging residents, especially those in the seafood industry to apply for open spots on a number of Gulf of Mexico Fishery Management Council advisory panels.join

There are 21 advisory panels that need members, including advisory panels on aquaculture, grouper, red drum, red snapper, reef fish and shrimp.

The advisory panels provide information and help develop management rules for various fish species in the Gulf of Mexico.

The council is looking for recreational and commercial fishermen to join the panels, as well as seafood dealers and processors, conservationists, scientists, and concerned citizens.

County commissioners say it could be very useful for local people to get involved in the advisory panels where they can have some input in creating the rules that affect the seafood industry.

The board agreed to put an advertisement in the local paper asking interested people to sign up and will also investigate having one of its own members join one of the panels.

Advisory panel members serve for two years and can reapply for their positions.

They generally meet no more than once or twice each year and are compensated for travel and per diem expenses for all meetings.

If you would like to apply for a position you can get all of the information at gulfcouncil.org.

Résumé’s and letters will be accepted through April the 5th.
