Florida urges wildfire safety

With two large wildfires burning in south Florida, and a smaller one burning south of Bristol, the state is urging homeowners to make sure their homes are protected.

Officials expect this to be a very active wildfire season because of strong freezes this winter which has left plenty of dried vegetation to burn.

Current fire weather forecasts call for active fire behavior throughout the state in the days ahead.

Homeowners are urged to do a little yard work to make suret heir homes are as protected as possible.

Remove all dead ground cover, branches, and trees from your yard, clean your rooftops and gutters and make sure you remove anything near your home that could serve as fuel in the event of a wildfire and relocate them.

Its recommended that you create a defensible space of 30’-60’ around your home where nothing will ignite or continue to burn and if possible, landscape with more fire resistant plants and vegetation and make sure they stay pruned and well watered.
