Dear Franklin County Community Leader:
This is a special invitation for you to participate in a workshop called Living on the Edge, How to
Have a Firewise Community as an important step toward improving wildfire safety in Franklin County.
Franklin County Emergency Management has teamed up with the Florida Division of Forestry (DOF) to
hold this workshop Tuesday, May 17, 2011, at the Apalachicola National Estuarine Research
Reserve, Education and Training Center (NERR), 108 Island Drive , Eastpoint, FL 32328, from
8:30 am to 1:00 pm. The workshop is free and will include lunch.
Your participation in this workshop is important. Due to drought conditions, local wildfire risk is likely to
escalate, and a coordinated, community-wide planning effort will be an important part of both fire
prevention and fire response. Costs for fighting wildfire average ten times the cost of fire prevention
measures. This workshop will help participants look at ways to incorporate wildfire protection practices
into the daily operation of Franklin County’s communities, especially those in vulnerable areas of the
“wildland/urban interface.”
Firewise is a program designed by the National Wildfire Coordinating Group and adapted to the unique
needs of Florida by the DOF. The program is coordinated by Normandeau Associates of Gainesville. This
will be an enjoyable learning experience using an interactive approach with videos, discussion, and
computer-based simulations to explain wildfire protection in real-world situations.
Please register online by Thursday, May 12. If you have questions, please contact Elise Cassie,
workshop coordinator, at ecassie@normandeau.com or call 352-359-0722.
We look forward to seeing you on May 17.
Sincerely,
Peter Colverson
