NOAA continues survey of Gulf Coast fishing economy

NOAA and the Gulf State Marine Fisheries Commission are once again surveying saltwater fishermen across the Southeast to get a better idea of how much money saltwater fishing puts in the Gulf Coast economy.
Throughout 2011, thousands of fishermen along the Gulf Coast will be asked about how much they spend every year on saltwater fishing.
They are interested in answering questions like how long fishing trips generally last and how much fishermen spend on bait, boat fuel, ice, charter fees and other expenses.
Some fishermen will also be asked to participate in a follow-up survey to estimate what they spend on durable goods such as boats and fishing tackle.
The survey will include all types of fishermen including people who fish from shore, from docks, from party or charter boats and from privately owned boats.
Field interviews have already begun and will continue throughout December.
