Progress Energy helps Apalachicola customers save energy through education

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (March 16, 2011) – As many as 100 Apalachicola customers could soon begin saving energy and money without investing a dime, thanks to an energy-efficiency workshop hosted by Progress Energy Florida, the Hillside Coalition of Laborers for Apalachicola (H’COLA) and the Apalachicola Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA).
“One of the most effective and least expensive ways to save energy and money is by changing how we use electricity,” said Vincent Dolan, president and chief executive officer of Progress Energy Florida. “As a company that has helped Floridians save more than $1 billion in energy costs in the past 30 years, we know what it takes to reduce your energy bill, and we’re eager to put our expertise to work for our Apalachicola customers.”
Recognizing the local need for energy education, H’COLA and the CRA approached Progress Energy with a suggestion to bring personally delivered, energy-saving information to area customers. The three organizations partnered to develop the March 28 Energy Efficiency Discussion and Dinner – a free neighborhood event that will focus on helping customers better understand how they use energy while highlighting some simple, low- and no-cost changes they can make to lower their bills.
“H'COLA is committed to the betterment of our community,” said Tami Ray-Hutchinson, secretary/publicist for H'COLA. “Any valuable information that we can bring or assist in bringing helps to accomplish this goal. Energy efficiency and savings are major concerns in today's economy.  H'COLA is proud to partner with CRA and Progress Energy to share valuable, money-saving information with our community.”
The free event is open to all local residents. Organizers anticipate that up to 100 local residents will attend.

Since 1981, Progress Energy Florida has helped its customers have saved more than $1 billion by participating in its energy-efficiency programs – a savings that represents enough electricity conserved by customers to power more than 900,000 homes for a year. These programs have helped eliminate more than 8.3 million tons of CO2 (equal to removing more than 1.8 million cars off the road every year). Energy efficiency is critical to meeting our state’s long-term energy needs. It is the quickest, easiest and most environmentally-friendly way to reduce energy use. During the next decade, the utility anticipates these measures will avoid the need for an additional 1,500 megawatts of new generation.
