Students from the University of Florida College of Fine Arts will be spending their spring break in Franklin County again this year providing assistance to some residents and working at a local school.
Students will conduct home health assessments, as well as build a children’s sculpture and organic food garden at a local school. They will also continue to collect oral histories of from local fishermen – a project they began last year.
The students will also undertake a major school-based theater program to address the high rate of sexually transmitted diseases in the county and work with local artists to provide arts for home-bound individuals.
The UF team will be in Franklin County along with 23 artists and health care providers from March 6th through the 12th.
The group chose to spend Spring Break in Franklin County because we are one of Florida’s areas of critical concern with 23.1 percent of residents living below the poverty level, compared to 13.3 percent in the rest of the state.
Many residents in the seafood industry are also facing challenges from recent oil spill, changing weather conditions and ever increasing FDA regulations.
