Emergency management officials continue work to expand cell service to North Franklin County

Emergency Management officials say they are still working on a plan to expand cell phone service to heavily wooded areas of the county.

Franklin County undertook the project last October after concerns were raised that a lack of cell phone service on Highway 65 and County Road 67 poses a danger to the large number of people who hunt in the area.

And hunters aren’t the only ones affected by the lack of cell phone service in the northern part of the county - The area is also frequented by fishermen and both roads are heavily traveled.

Emergency Management Director Pam Brownell said her office is working with the state on the situation – she is pushing the argument that cellular service needs to be expanded to help emergency services in not just Franklin county but also areas historically without it including portions of Liberty and Wakulla counties.
