Franklin County recognized for supporting military training exercise

Franklin County commissioners received a plaque on Tuesday for the role the county played during this years Emerald Warrior training.

Exercise Emerald Warrior is a U.S. Special Operations Command-sponsored mission rehearsal exercise involving soldiers from various parts of the armed services.

The exercise was held in early March in multiple states and training sites throughout the southeast including Tate’s Hell in Franklin County.

This year the exercise included 200 soldiers, airmen and marines, all of whom will be sent to Iraq or Afghanistan over the next year.

The plaque was presented by Special Operations Commander Jeff Mason who said the training is critical for the troops.

He did acknowledge that there were some communications problems this year and that some residents were frightened when the exercises moved to close to neighborhoods.

He pointed out that the exercise did not use live round but added that next year they would work harder to make sure residents know what is going on.

Commissioner Cheryl Sanders said she thinks that would be a good idea adding that the troops were lucky that no rounds were fired back at them by homeowners.
