Franklin County will receive a little over 1.6 million dollars from BP to help promote our area to tourists.
The money is part of a $30-million marketing grant which will be distributed to counties impacted by the BP oil spill.
The first installment should come to the county after the 1st of May, there will be another payment 90 days later and a final payment 90 days after that.
The money has to be used to increase tourism and will be managed through the Franklin County Tourist Development Council.
Council member Curt Blair said with this new grant Franklin County will have received 2.6 million dollars from BP for promotional activities.
Mister Blair the county is still suffering from a decline in tourist numbers as a result of the oil spill – they estimate a decline of somewhere 10 and 15 percent.
This money, he said, should go a long way toward shoring up our summer, fall and next spring’s markets.
The TDC is currently deciding how best to spend the money.
