FWC to consider new gag grouper rule next week

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission will vote on a rule next week that could bring state gag grouper rules in line with federal regulations.

The proposed rule would close recreational Gulf gag grouper fishing from June 1st through the end of 2011, with the exception of a September 16 - November 15 open season.

The rule would allow for some recreational harvest of gag grouper in federal waters and some harvest in state waters by federally-permitted for-hire vessels in 2011 that otherwise would not occur.

The closure would mimic a recent interim federal action for Gag grouper in Gulf of Mexico federal waters.

The Fish and Wildlife Commission will vote on the rule on Wednesday at their meeting in Havana and if its approved it will take effect this year.
