New species of snail found in the Gulf of Mexico
A new species of shellless snail has been found in the Gulf of Mexico off Florida.
Biologists with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, along with scientists from California State Polytechnic University, have identified a new shell-less snail known as a nudibranch (pronounced "nu-da-brank").
FWC biologists found the snail, who’s official name is now c.fentoni, while digging through sponges and other specimens a commercial fisherman named Daniel Fenton donated to the FWC's Fish and Wildlife Research Institute in 2009.
When researchers were unable to identify one of the snails they sent samples to California State Polytechnic University which verified that this species had never been documented.
The article about C. fentoni appeared in the 2011 volume of the "American Malacological Bulletin,".
The article also talks about another species of nudibranch found in the mix which had not been documented since 1890, except once in a photograph.
