Grants available to increase longleaf pine forests in Florida

Florida’s division of Forestry is making money available to private forest landowners to increase the acreage of healthy Longleaf pine forests in Florida.
The program will provide money to help with activities like timber stand improvement, invasive species control, prescribed burning and planting longleaf pine trees.
Landowners who own at least 10 acres of private forest can apply for the assistance.
Longleaf pine forests once covered a vast range from Texas to Virginia, but have now been reduced to less than four percent of their historical area.
Longleaf pine forests, however, are highly valued for their resistance to damage by insects, diseases, wildfire, and storms, and for their high quality wood products.
Application forms and more information on program requirements and procedures can be obtained from the local Division of Forestry office or on-line at www.fl-dof.com.
The sign-up period will run through May the 6th
