This is the time of year that shorebirds start nesting along the coast and volunteers are being sought to help protect them.
Franklin County is a very popular nesting site – species that nest here include pelicans and sea gulls.
We also have Royal terns, Caspian Terns, black skimmers, Sandwich terns, and Gull billed terns.
The Audubon of Florida group will introduce its Shorebird Stewardship Program in Franklin County this year.
The program has volunteers hang out near nesting sites to explain to beachgoers why that portion of the beach is closed and also to teach people a little about the birds that nest here.
Other jobs stewards can get include posting nesting areas, monitoring nests, assisting with shorebird surveys, and participating in beach cleanups.
If you would like to take part in the Shorebird Stewardship Program there will be a training class on Saturday in Eastpoint.
The class will be held at the Estuarine Research Reserve Building from 9 till noon.
If you have questions you can call Alan Knothe at 850-200-6279.
