If you live in the cities of Apalachicola or Carrabelle and have a problem with stray animals, don’t call animal control.
It turns out the cities don’t have an interlocal agreement with the county to provide animal control services in the city limits.
The question came up earlier this month after commission chairman Noah Lockley said he was receiving complaints about stray dogs in Apalachicola.
The county attorney was asked to investigate the issue and said that neither city has either signed an agreement with the county for animal control services and also do not pay for the service.
Back in the early 90’s animal control services were provided by the sheriff’s department and they did work in the cities.
That changed in the early 2000’s when the county created a separate animal control department overseen by the county solid waste department.
If you do live in one of the cities and call animal control, they will tell you to call your city police department.
