Good news for boaters in the Apalachicola Bay.
The Department of Environmental Protection has finally issued the permit needed to remove the pilings left after the destruction of the old St. George Island Bridge.
The pilings were supposed to have been removed when the bridge was demolished in 2005; instead they were broken off just below the waterline.
The danger area extends from the foot of the St. George Island fishing pier to the old causeway.
The area has been marked so that boaters steer clear of the pilings.
County planner Alan Pierce said that now that the permit has finally been issued, the Department of Transportation should begin the piling removal very quickly.
