Tar balls washed up on St. George Island over the weekend.
The tar balls were found on the east end of the island on Saturday and Sunday including in the St. George Island state park.Officials don’t yet know if the tar balls are because of the BP oil spill but the state Department of Environmental Protection and the U.S. Coast Guard were called to collect and test samples.
They will also decide how best to remove the tar balls from the beach.
The tar balls were found mostly on the high tide line and were anywhere from about a half inch to 4 inches wide.
Visitors are being notified of tar balls and strong rip currents at the ranger station before entering the park.
