Apalachicola resident killed in plane crash at Eglin


A long-time Franklin County resident was one of two people killed in a plane crash at Eglin Air Force Base on Thursday.
Thom Lewis was a biologist with the US Fish and Wildlife Service; he spent many years studying the red wolves at St. Vincent Island.
Most recently he was working with Migratory Bird Surveys.
Mister Lewis, along with David Miles of Shalimar were practicing maneuvers in ae Beech C24R Sierra when it crashed at about 4:30 Thursday morning.
Mister Miles was Mister Lewis’ flight instructor, the plane were in belonged to the Air Force Base but was available to the public through the base’s Aero Club.
Officials do not know who was flying the plane t the time of the accident but the crash will be investigated by the Air Force, the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board.
