Budget cuts force closure of Carrabelle health department annex

Budget cuts are forcing the Franklin County Health Department to close its Annex in Carrabelle.
According to health department chief Wesley Tice, the health department’s budget was cut by over 200 thousand dollars this year so the department is going to have to consolidate services in Apalachicola to save money.
Carrabelle residents will still have primary health care in the city at the Weems Medical Center East location which is right next door to the Carrabelle health department.
Mister Tice pointed out that the Carrabelle location was originally opened to fill the gap caused when Bayshore Medical closed down, but now Carrabelle has its own medical clinic which makes the health department less critical.
County Commissioners have expressed some concerns over the closure; the county provides about 150 thousand dollars a year to help fund the Carrabelle location but Mister Tice said that’s just not enough to keep it going any longer.
