The Franklin County commission has agreed to raise its starting wage for new workers.
The board voted last week to raise the starting salaries for new county workers to 25 thousand dollars beginning July the 1st.
That will bring the starting wage up from about 21 thousand dollars.
County commissioners took the action to stop the high turnover of workers from county departments – they have lost a number of workers in recent years to higher paying jobs with the cities and private enterprise.
The board also agreed that existing workers who currently make less than 25 thousand dollars a year should also get a pay increase so they too are making 25 thousand dollars a year.
County administrator Alan Pierce said there are currently 9 workers in that category and it will cost the county about 10 thousand dollars more to pay them through the rest of this fiscal year.
There are also a few long time employees who are barely making over 25 thousand dollars a year and the county said they will also look at increasing their salaries.
Alan Pierce said he will look at each worker’s pay and recommend any increase to the county at a future meeting.
