Franklin County school board rejects proposed calendar

The Franklin County School Board Thursday night rejected a proposed calendar for the next school year that would have lengthened the work day for teachers but shortened the overall school year.

The calendar would have shortened the school year by 24 days, so summer vacation would have started on May the 10th instead of in June like this year.

In exchange, the school day would have been extended by a half hour to 3:30.

It’s estimated the calendar could have saved around 200 thousand dollars next year, though even that number is being questioned.

4 of the 5 school board members voted against the calendar – one of the main concerns was that the calendar had not been voted on by teachers before it was brought to the board.

The calendar wasn’t even made by the school’s calendar committee – According to Denise Roux, the committee’s proposal was effectively pushed aside when the school district learned of its looming budget problems.

There were also concerns raised about the major impact the calendar would have on lunchroom staff, which would see 17 percent of its income cut under the proposal.

The shorter school year is one of many cost cutting plans the school system is being forced consider to cover a nearly 2 million dollar budget hole next year.

They have a list of other cost saving ideas on the table ranging from cuts in payroll and benefits for teachers to no longer paying for field trips from the general fund.

Now that the calendar has been rejected, teachers are left not knowing what the next school year is going to look like but the board says it discuss the issue again before the end of the month.

Its on the agenda for a June 23rd special meeting.
