Georgia teen charged with burning Apalachicola church
An arrest has been made in connection with a May 16th fire that destroyed the Love Center Church in Apalachicola.
Police arrested a 17 year old from Jakins, Georgia, who was visiting Apalachicola at that time.
The boys name is not being released because he’s a juvenile.
Investigators were able to find the teen after they discovered that a number of telephone calls had been made using the church’s fax line when the building was supposed to have been empty.
They traced the calls to the boy’s mother and another individual both of whom said that they had been called.
Investigators said the boy admitted to breaking into the church twice, making phone calls and taking money, a flat screen TV and other miscellaneous items.
He is now facing charges of burglary, grand theft and arson.
The Fire Marshall’s office investigation showed that the fire had been purposefully set in the pastor’s office, in the northwest corner of the church.
The suspect is currently being held at the Leon County Juvenile Detention Center.
The investigation was conducted by The State Fire Marshal's Office in conjunction with the Apalachicola Police Department, Franklin County Sheriff’s Office, Florida Department of Law Enforcement, State Attorney’s Office, and the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms.
The Love Center will resume services this Sunday morning at the Love CenterPlex across the street from the destroyed church.
