Franklin County seeks state funding for solid waste department

County commissioners this week signed the annual solid waste application asking for state money to help offset the costs of handling local solid waste.

The grant used to provide Franklin County over 277 thousand dollars to help fund its solid waste operations, but in recent years the grant amount has fallen to just 70 thousand dollars.

Franklin County has used the money in the past primarily for capital outlay projects like buying new trucks and machinery.

So far the cuts have not had a major impact on day to day operations at the landfill, but the county is concerned that at some point soon the state cuts will force the county to either spend more local tax dollars at the landfill or to begin cutting services.

The money is provided annually to the 34 Florida counties with fewer than 100 thousand residents.
