Franklin County seeks money to pave Pine Street on St. George Island

Franklin County will apply for a state grant to pave Pine Street on St. George Island.

The county will try to get money through the County Incentive Grant Program which pays to enhance roads that can alleviate congestion on the state highway system.

Initially the board had sought money to repave south bayshore drive and Patton Drive in Eastpoint which provide alternate routes from Highway 98 to the St. George Island Bridge.

County officials now feel that Pine Street is a better choice because it gets a lot of traffic but is still unpaved.

If the state will pay for the paving the county will save a lot of money by not having to constantly maintain the road.

Commissioner Pinki Jackel said Pine Street in its unpaved state is a high maintenance road because of the number of large vehicles like garbage trucks that damage the road.

County Planner Alan Pierce said Pine Street is eligible for the grant because it provides a detour for traffic of Franklin Boulevard and Gulf Beach Drive, both of which are state roads.

The deadline to apply for the grant is June the 15th.
