The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission decided on Thursday to reopen the recreational harvest season for snook in Florida’s Atlantic waters on September the 1st, but people fishing in the Gulf of Mexico will have to continue releasing any snook they catch.
Only catch-and-release fishing for snook has been allowed statewide since December 15th to protect snook populations which were hit hard by cold weather last winter.
Commissioners agreed to the reopening after a deciding that snook on Florida’s Atlantic coast were less severely impacted by cold weather than Gulf coast snook.
It will be a while before Gulf coast fishermen can keep a snook.
The current harvest prohibition in all state and federal waters in the Gulf of Mexico will remain in effect until August 31st, 2012 to allow the Gulf snook population more time to rebound.
