Governor Rick Scott on Wednesday signed legislation that caps the tax rate Florida’s 5 water management districts can levy.
Northwest Florida home and business owners won’t see a decrease in what they pay to the Northwest Florida Water Management District but they won’t see an increase either.
Under the bill the Northwest Florida Water Management District will be limited to a .05 mill levy on homes and businesses.
Beginning next year the water districts will have to have their preliminary budget and authorized millage rate reviewed by the state Senate which will then set the amount of revenue the districts can raise through its ad valorem tax authority.
Property owners in other portions of the state will actually see the amount they pay their water management districts drop; the Southwest Florida Water Management District will see a 36% cut in their tax levy, people in the Suwannee River Water Management District will see an 8% reduction.
People will also have more access to information about their water management district’s budget.
Each district is now required to provide a monthly financial statement to its governing board and make the information available to the public on the district’s website.
