ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (June 28, 2011) – Progress Energy Florida crews are working to restore power to St. George Island following severe storms Monday night. At about 8:15 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time (EDT), storms with heavy winds and possible water spouts damaged two transmission poles carrying power from the Eastpoint area across the channel in Apalachicola Bay to St. George Island. Power to the island is out. Progress Energy serves approximately 2,200 homes and businesses on the island.
Crews are working to restore power as safely and as quickly as possible. The company is working to establish a temporarily power on the island while the damaged transmission poles in the bay are replaced. It is estimated that temporary power will available on the island overnight. The pole replacement could take several days due to the extent of the damage and location of the structures. Additional storms are forecasted for the area and could impact restoration and pole replacement efforts.
To expedite power restoration to affected customers, Progress Energy is asking customers on St. George Island to turn off the power to air-conditioning systems and other equipment. Once the generators are installed and are powering the island, customers may turn power back on to these appliances.
