The Apalachicola National Estuarine Research Reserve will hold a ribbon-cutting ceremony for its new education and research facility next week.
Work on the nearly 19 thousand square foot was completed earlier this year and the center is now open to the public every Tuesday through Saturday. There is no charge to tour the facility which includes a number of large aquariums, and many other items from Franklin County including a whale backbone.
There are also a number of pieces of Franklin County maritime history, an overview of the seafood industry, lots of information about the Apalachicola River and Bay system and some really cool fish specimens in jars.
Besides the display section of the facility there are also research labs, and an outdoor amphitheatre.
The 7 million dollar project took nearly 2 years to complete.
The center is located on Island Drive in Eastpoint at the foot of the St. George Island Bridge overlooking Cat Point, one of the most productive oyster bars in Apalachicola Bay.
The ceremony and tour of the Nature Center, will take place next Wednesday beginning at 10:30 in the morning.
The Apalachicola National Estuarine Research Reserve Nature Center is at 108 Island Drive near the foot of the St. George Island bridge.
