Caitlin’s 1st Annual Beach Cleanup was a huge success.
The Beach cleanup was held Wednesday – it was the brainchild of 11 year old Caitlin Smith who lives in Colorado but her parents own a business on St. George Island.
Caitlin said she and her family have visited the island every other year since she was one and this year she decided to help clean up her favorite vacation spot.
25 volunteers joined in to help her and they picked up nearly 50 bags of trash from the beach, Lighthouse Park, Pine Street, Island Drive, and the south side of the bridge.
That came out to about 400 pounds of trash no longer on the beach.
The volunteers found trash of all kinds including pop up tent frames, broken coolers, cigarette butts, wooden pallets, bottle caps and plenty of plastic bottles.
