NOAA fisheries to increase red snapper quota

Red Snapper fishermen might get a chance to get out on the water a little more before year’s end.

NOAA Fisheries Service said that beginning on September 12th it will increase this year’s red snapper quota by 345,000 pounds and could re-open the recreational red snapper season later this year.

If there is additional fishing allowed it will be because of last year’s oil spill which closed so much of the Gulf of Mexico that recreational fishermen only caught 66 percent of the annual quota of about 7.2 million pounds.

The decision to re-open the season will depend on whether fishermen already hit the new quota during the regular red snapper season which ended July 19th.

The fisheries service is figuring that out now.

The plan to increase the red snapper quota was published in the federal register last week – you can see the announcement in full at the news page at oysterradio.com.
