SOUTHERLAND VOTES AGAINST DEBT LIMIT COMPROMISE
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Representative Steve Southerland, II issued the following statement following his vote against the congressional debt limit compromise, which passed the House Monday evening by a 269-161 margin:
“Long before I came to Congress, I made a commitment to the people of North and Northwest Florida that I’d reject any debt limit increase that fails to address the tremendous economic challenges facing America today. I voted against this debt limit compromise because it falls short of conquering our debt crisis and does little to change the culture in Washington.
“I believe that any serious plan for spending reform must begin with guaranteed congressional approval of a Balanced Budget Amendment and spending cuts large enough to eliminate the threat of a crippling downgrade in America’s credit rating. This compromise ensures neither. Making matters worse, the proposal hands authority to a small congressional commission with the prospect of large cuts in defense spending and Medicare benefits. Let me be clear, my focus remains on finding solutions to our serious economic challenges, not on simply finishing a deal.”
