Public Meeting to Consider Apalachicola River-Beaverdam Creek Recreation

Havana, FL –Recreation on a recently-acquired tract along the Apalachicola River near Bristol will be the focus of a public meeting hosted by the Northwest Florida Water Management District.  Participants are invited to offer ideas on Tuesday, October 11, 6 p.m. at the Veterans Memorial Civic Center, 10405 NW Theo Jacobs Lane in Bristol.
“The District purchased the Beaverdam Creek tract to protect water resources of the Apalachicola River” said Tyler Macmillan, Bureau Chief of Land Management Operations.  “We’re inviting suggestions for activities that are consistent with the District’s water and natural resource protection mission.”
The 1,317-acre property in Liberty County includes one access road with an unimproved boat ramp on Harry Donar Road, as well as considerable riverfront and rich biological areas.  The District’s land management strategy is to protect and, where necessary, restore natural areas, while providing public access and compatible recreation.  This may include managed hunting, fishing, boating, canoeing/kayaking, hiking, birdwatching, nature appreciation, primitive camping and other low-impact activities.
Hunting on the Beaverdam Creek tract will be managed in cooperation with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) as the Beaverdam Creek Wildlife Management Area.  The public is invited to comment concerning the hunting seasons and rules, which are being developed for the area.
In the interim, during the 2011-2012 hunting season, small game hunting will be allowed on the tract during the statewide small game season.  Holders of a wildlife management area permit and hunting license may participate in this initial season.  FWC representatives will attend the meeting to discuss proposed hunting regulations.
