Tropics Update: Tuesday Morning Notes on Tropical Storm Philippe

Summary:
·         At 5am ET Tuesday, Tropical Storm Philippe and was located 720 miles southeast of Bermuda, which is also about 1,383 miles east-southeast of Miami, Florida.
·         Philippe is moving to the west at 10 mph. This general motion is forecast through today but Philippe is expected to turn toward the northwest on Wednesday as the storm is steered around the southeastern edge of a large high pressure ridge in the central Atlantic Ocean.
·         Computer models and the official forecast track from the National Hurricane Center show Philippe curving sharply toward the north and northeast in about 48 hours as the ridge of high pressure weakens and the storm is steered by a trough of low pressure and cold front in the western Atlantic Ocean.
·         Maximum sustained winds are near 65 mph and gradual strengthening is forecast over the next day or so as wind shear over Philippe’s path decreases. Philippe may reach hurricane strength by Wednesday.
