Apalachicola National Forest prepares for 2012 burn season

You are going to see some smoke in the air around the Apalachicola National Forest in the near future when the U.S. Forest Service starts its prescribed fire season for 2012.

The Forest Service is planning to conduct controlled burns on nearly 100,000 acres over the coming year to help prevent wildfires and promote a healthy forest.

Controlled burns are a regular part of forest management.

Plants and animals native to the longleaf pine habitat depend on natural fire cycles to balance habitat and food sources.

Prescribed burning is also one of the most effective land management tools used in preventing the outbreak and spread of wildfires.

The Forest Service does announce when it plans to burn a particular tract but they usually do so very close to the time the burn actually happens because the decision is dependent on having exactly the right weather conditions.

If you would like to see a map of the proposed burn locations for 2012, you will find it posted on the news page at oysterradio.com.
